Marybeth & Lora’s Class Notes

Owls, owls, and more owls! The children have wrapped up their study of these fascinating creatures with presentations of their research. Many questions were answered, such as How far can an owl turn its head? and How do owls hunt?, among other topics that piqued their interest.

With Valentine’s day on the horizon the children enjoyed marbling heart-shaped paper with a simple technique using shaving cream. The project was equally fun and yielded beautiful results. The children have also been musing about what love is. Their hearts and writing on the subject were used to decorate their “valentine mailboxes.”

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory proved to be so captivating, that we immediately launched into another Roald Dahl Book - the BFG. The children are enthralled by the kind-hearted, dream catching giant.

Earlier in the month we participated in a beautiful celebration of Black history at our annual African American Read-In. The class recited Langston Hughes’ poem, My People, and our Maddie recited another of his poems, The Snail on her own. We will gather again in celebration at our upcoming Soul Food Night in March. In preparation we have been learning about Ella Jenkins, known as “The First Lady of Children’s Music.” We have been listening to a variety of her music and learning two of her songs with Hudson Music.

When we return from the winter break our study of cycles will focus on the moon.
