Liz's Class Notes

The senior learners have apprenticed this fall with various mentors, including The South Fork Natural History Museum and Science Center, The Children’s Museum of the East End, John Jermain Memorial Library, and The Animal Rescue Fund, as well as with the Culinary Arts team of Scott and Phoebe, Scientist-in-Residence Ryan, and artists Sabra and Perry. This eight-week apprenticeship will conclude before the Thanksgiving break, after which the senior learners will begin creating digital portfolios to document and reflect on their learning. We’ve also had a ball learning the harmonica! The students are discovering the complexities of isolating a single note, mastering blues chords, and learning to read musical notation through a few lively tunes.

Meanwhile, we’re hard at work imagining ways to structure our book project, The Hayground School Lexicon—a living portrait of our community told through words. The Lexicon gathers the voices of parents, students, founders, graduates, and friends—past and present—each contributing a single word that captures what Hayground means to them. Together, these words form a collective story: one of curiosity, creativity, and care; of a school that has grown from shared values and countless individual experiences. More than a collection of vocabulary, The Hayground School Lexicon is a reflection of a vibrant community bound by learning, love, and the enduring spirit of Hayground. Happy Halloween!!!
