Hayground Art Studio
Our mask project has gotten off to a stellar start! Inspired by masks from around the world, we are studying masks from countries throughout Africa, Indonesia, Java, the South Pacific Islands, the Pacific Northwest, Asia and Carnival masks from Rio de Janeiro, Venice, New Orleans and Trinidad and Tabago.
We are exploring the cultural history of masks and their significance in the creation of ritual, storytelling, myth, celebration and identity, and relating how these modes of expression can apply in our own lives through personal stories, imaginative play, and animal spirits and symbols.
We have started by experimenting with clay and plaster and are introducing paper mache and cardboard, exploring the qualities of each of these materials and considering the form, function and expressive possibilities in the creation of their own personal masks. Come see our growing collection in the art studio of creatures great and small!
