ANNA'S CLASS NOTES

It is so hard to believe we are in the final weeks of the school year! It is an extremely exciting

time in our classroom, as our chicks are nearing the end of their incubation. Soon we will have

baby chicks in our room! As I wrote earlier, Gabe's mom, Donna, came in and brought us eggs

laid by her hens, Bev and Dixie, and fertilized by her rooster Fozzie. Donna brought in a poster

with photos of Bev, Dixie and Fozzie so the class could see what the parents look like. These three

chickens are all very different and interesting looking and we are very excited to see how the

chicks turn out! The class made some predictions and sketches of what they thought the chickens

might look like.

As I wrote earlier, we investigated eggs with an "egg dissection" and thought about how eggs

are constructed (many layers and why this is important. We have been tracking the development

of the chicks inside the eggs with a hatching timeline. Donna came in to help us "candle" the eggs.

We were able to see the shadow of the developing embryo inside the eggs and the last time she

came we saw the baby chicks moving inside the eggs! I posted a video of the last candling Donna

did on the website. A very eggs-citing time indeed!
