After school activities begin this week! Please see Cheryl to drop off your fee. We have a well subscribed roster this year. Please remember that pick-up is promptly at 4:30 Mon -Thurs and 2:00 pm on Fridays.

Drop-off  and Pick-up protocols:

Drop off is between 8:10 and 8:25 and pick up is at 3:00 pm and 12:30 on Fridays. If you arrive late, please drop your child in the office. We ask that playdates be made outside of school hours. 

If you park in the parking lot, please walk to pick-up your child. Children cannot walk to the parking lot on their own. Please enter on Mitchell lane.  When you pick up your child, please keep an eye on the them on the playground. Children are not allowed to play in gym or school building after pickup. Also, for safety reasons, the trees will be closed to climbing both during the school day and at pickup.  We appreciate your help in reminding children.

The first Parent Committee meeting will be on September 30 at 2:00pm

Second Week of School

We have one confirmed case of Covid at school with other reported cases in the community.

We follow Suffolk County DOH Guidelines below.

If your child exhibits symptoms of the flu, RSV or COVID 19, such as, fever, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea, please keep your child home until he/she is fever-free for 24 hours without the aid of medication and has tested negative for COVID or your health care practitioner provides written clearance.  If your child has tested positive for Covid-19 virus, He/she can go back to his/her normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, she/he is fever-free and the symptoms are improving overall. Upon your child’s return to normal activities, take added precaution over the next 5 days, such as taking additional steps for cleaner air, hygiene, masks and physical distancing. 

A few reminders:

  • The first Parent Committee meeting will on September 30 at 2:00pm – September 29.

  • Drop-off is at 8:25 and pick up is at 3:00 pm and 12:30 on Fridays. If you arrive late, please drop your child in the office. Please keep your eye out for updates to our Parent Handbook with regard to absences, lateness and extended vacations.

  • Lunch begins this week! We will always serve lunch Tuesday - Friday. Please remember to send your child with snack and lunch on Mondays.

  • This Friday is Apple Picking at Halsey Farm in Mecox. Please remember to send in your permission slip. We will be leaving school around 9:30 to arrive by 10. In order to make sure no one is left out the school is purchasing delicious donuts for everyone so you don’t have to send extra money. 

  • Thank you all for your rapid response to the afterschool offerings this fall. After school begins  Monday, September 22. Please be sure to contact Arjun for your enrollment - not the instructor. Please give your payments to Cheryl or Joanna. We still have space in:

Welcome to the first week of school and our 30th year!

School starts at 8:30 - please drop your child off between 8:10 and 8:25 so they have a moment to get settled.

Please remember to send your child/ren with snack and lunch until Tuesday, September 16th. We make lunch always  from Tuesday - Friday, never on Mondays. Please always send your child with a snack.

Please join us after drop off this week, Wednesday to Friday, for parent coffees. It is a nice chance to talk to other parents and enjoy a warm cup of coffee and pastry.

Keep an eye out  for a separate email with our afterschool offerings for this fall and winter. 

We are happy to announce that Hudson Music will be back with us this year. Students from 3-7 years old will have music during the school day and those 7 and up can sign up for afterschool music on Mondays from 3:00-4:30 and Fridays from 12:30 -2:00. Please note that the goal of the after school music classes is to work towards a performance. Consistent attendance is important if your child wants to be part of the performance. There is no fee for Hudson Music.

Please mark your calendar for our first Parent Committee meeting on September 29 at 2:00pm.

Each class will have a pool time this week Thursday or Friday. Please send your child with a bathing suit, towel and sunblock. We will have a certified life guard.

June 2 Updates

Last week’s Senior Learners presentations and the Science Symposium were both very inspiring. We learned about French pastry, Teaching and Old Dog New Tricks, Healthy Poptarts, Carbon footprints, Micro plastics in seafood and how to filter water, among many other topics.

We are gearing up for the final week of school and the graduation of Nate Feierstein, Aidan Menu, Jazmyn Charlton, Sophia Letcher, Dutch Lawless and Augie Feuerborn. Graduation is a very special day and we encourage all families to join us for the celebration on June 13 at 10 am followed by a lunch picnic and the unveiling of the yearbook.

The Chair Auction from Julie and Jackie’s Class  was a grand success and the  Senior Learners completed their presentations on a wide variety of topics from French Pastry to Prison Reform.  

This Friday, May 23 is the last day of after school programs.

Tuesday, May 20 - the three middle groups are heading to the Bronx Zoo for a fun filled day. The oldest and two youngest classes are going to share a picnic lunch together.

🌷A Busy Week!🌷

Sightings of two Osprey in our nest have been reported! The Cherry blossoms are in full force. The Native plant around the reader sculpture in blooming. Our Salad and veggies are mostly from Hayground gardens!

Tuesday, May 6 at 2:15 there will be the Student Art Exhibit featuring art from all of the Hayground Students. All parents, grandparents and friends of Hayground are invited.
Tuesday, May 6 at 2:15 Parents in Lucy’s class are invited to the their Museum opening.

The Parent Committee did some wonderfull work preparing for the school dance last week - Thank You! The dance is May 8 from 5-7pm for students in the oldest four classes. It will be followed by the sleepover for students who are 10 years old by September 2025. Perry, R.J, Julie, Hannah and Oskar with be chaperoning.

The screening of “Anxious Nation” by Hayground parent Vanessa Roth was a truly wonderland informative event. We had over 50 attendees from both Hayground and the community.

Campus in Spring Bloom 🌷

We hope you had a wonderful spring break. The campus is starting to bloom. Keep an eye on our osprey nest to see if we have any new occupants. 

Our Senior learners will be on their trip to Philadelphia from Wednesday to Friday. The middle groups will be visiting the Bridgehampton library on Friday to see the books they published on display and read the reviews from the librarians. Keep an eye out for permission slips from you teachers. Our spring schedule of events and celebration is very busy so take a moment to update your calendars.

Again, if you haven’t gotten your contract in and have not been in touch with Marcelle and Cheryl, please do so as soon as possible. If you have done so or are in process, thank you!

Friday, March 21 – Joe Salmone from LICAB ( Long Island Council against Bullying) will be coming to talk about friendships, how to treat each other well and offer healthy ways to handle difficult social situations. He will do age-appropriate visits with each group and then spend time with the faculty at faculty meeting.

Soul Food night was really special this year. The students did a great job celebrating African America Culture through Art, Song, Dance, History, and Poetry. The pineapple dessert competition was delicious and the dancing was on point. Thank you all for contributing.

The Faculty had a very inspiring Staff Development Day. We did a mini workshop with Hannah on coding and spent the rest of the day delving into the Descriptive Review- a methodology for looking really deeply at students work and how they carry themselves through the day. Attached is and article by Pat Carini,  “A Letter to Parents and Teachers”, that informed our day. It is worth the read.

Friday is Pi day.

We have been holding a series of “Kindness discussions” during our weekly afternoon gatherings. The topics the kids bring up include  “Are we saying please and thank you in the lunch line?” Are we cleaning up after ourselves in the lunchroom so that our friends who have clean-up that day don’t have so much work?”, “What does being a good friend look like?”
As an extension we are having "Friendship lunches” in smaller groups to deepen the conversation about what a good friend looks like.
