Tohanash and Javis’s Class Notes
This month has been cold but filled with joy, whether we are reading books to each other inside or playing in the snow, our days have been filled with activities and learning. This month we focused on friendship. We began our class friendship books which will be written for every student by the end of the year. This reinforces kindness and community which are driving forces in our learning process. A highlight of kindness came in the form of a visitor, Mimi Thayer (MermaidTailsCreations) of Sagaponack. She shared the healing vibrations of her gong and singing bowl, while we showcased our patience and teamwork together in class, Thank you for visiting Mimi!
In our specials we have been working on all sorts of projects. In the garden we planted some native seeds to take care of at home, while continuing to discover the effects of cold in the greenhouse. We have continued taking care of our chickens in this cold front, as they often need their water unfrozen or food to be fed. In Science we have begun diving deeper into the exploration of Long Island and discovering all corners. In music, we welcomed a change this month, as Mike joined us to introduce percussion instruments, exploring their unique sounds and learning about where they originated.
We enjoyed Faith Ringgold's “My Dream of Martin Luther King”, in class before our three-day weekend and enjoyed discussing topics from the book in our morning meetings. We will start our book buddies with Julie's class next week, which will allow our students to interact with older students and expand their love for literacy and community.
