Julie's Class Notes

Students have started to construct their first prototypes for this year’s Invent it! contest through the Simthsonian’s Lemelson Center and Cricket Media. The topic is to invent some-thing that will make sports more competitive, more inclusive or safer. As usual, the kids have come up with creative ideas that truly reflect their interests and passions. They have been steeped in the beginning of the invention process, which includes identifying a prob-lem to solve, researching what already exists, and designing their prototype.

We have been celebrating the contributions of black musicians through many won-derful children’s books like, A Voice Named Aretha and The Roots of Rap, and also listen-ing to their music in class.

The life of Aretha Franklin, and her belief in RESPECT led us to a discussion about how we like to be respected and appreciated. This Friday, when we observe Valentine’s Day we will lead with an understanding that each one of us has different needs and ways we like to be loved.
