Erin & Tohanash's Class Notes

March arrived in true March fashion with windy days and wildly fluctuating temperatures. Snow flur-ries one day, shoes and socks off the next. We adapt to the changes, bringing our imaginations outside in the form of sand forts and ice cream shops.

Continuing our self portraits, we mixed the colors red, yellow, black and white together as in the book The Colors of Us to achieve a hue as close to our skin tones as possible. Some of us made preparatory sketches while looking in mirrors, and as a class we discussed the shapes we see in our faces: triangles, semi-circles, ovals, and our ears look like the letter “C!” We also looked to some famous self portraits to see what they included in their pictures: Frida Kahlo might have a parrot or monkey on her shoulder, while Horace Pippin and Vincent Van Gogh hold their palettes and brushes. We discussed what we might include in our portraits.

We finished The BFG by Roald Dahl, which was quite exciting. The kids decided they wanted to con-tinue with this author, so we have begun reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I see chocolate in our future...

Our rainbow project has slowly continued, with us sorting our materials by color and wiring some pieces together for when we build it. Maria was our most recent Person of the Week, and we discovered that her favorite shoes are her rainbow sneakers! We continue to explore literacy through poems, and have read one about rain, and the most recent one is about worms. The kids have also been enjoying reading to one another in the mornings from the new emerging reader books Marcelle got for us. As you can see, our days are full, and we are super industrious.
