Anna's Class Notes

We had another great week filled with lots of outdoor play and exploration. We continued our study of empathy this week and created a poster together for our classroom with the definition of empathy and some illustrations of different feelings. We also began delving more deeply into the idea of identity. I began reading from a book written for young people called This Book is Anti-Racist, by Tiffany Jewell. We began talking about how some people are treated unfairly because of their identities. In the weeks to come we will be using this book to help anchor dicussions about inequality and discrimination in our world and how we can work to make changes that create a more fair and just society.

We continued our reading and writing workshops. This week students began sharing their writing with the class.

We read the book Houses and Homes by Ann Morris to launch a discussion about different types of homes all over the world. We talked about how people use materials that are available to them to build their homes. Our class began experimenting using a pile of stumps and branches that came from a tree that was cut down at Hayground. We made tripod structures as bases by tying the long branches together and the students have been trying out different ways of arranging the branches to make shelters and play structures.

We had a physically distanced outdoor gathering with Marybeth’s class and got to know a few other students at our school. The week before we met with Liz’s class. Each week we will be meeting another class until we have met everyone at Hayground!
