News: Hayground Students unveil “Seeds” at Parrish Art Museum                                                                                                                      Led by Studio Art & Garden teachers Jon Snow and Wunetu Tarrant, Hayground students unveiled “Seeds” at the Parrish Art Museum’s Student Exhibition on Saturday, January 30th.  Anchored by an 18-foot garlic scape and a 10-foot sunflower, the exhibit represents the immense biodiversity of plant seeds through drawing, painting, fiber arts, and sculpture.  “Seeds” is the fourth annual installation in Hayground’s Art of Science program, in which students research and re-create the scientific principles of a living system through mixed-media art. Event: Author RA Spratt to visit Hayground                                                                                                                                                 Award winning author RA Spratt will visit Hayground on Wednesday, March 2nd for a reading from her wildly popular Nanny Piggins series, and a sneak peak at her latest novel, Friday Barnes, Girl Detective.  The Australia-based author agreed to make a special stop at Hayground when she received a very enthusiastic fan letter from Hayground students Madeline and Samantha Grabb. News: Culinary Overview First Semester with Arjun & Scott                                                                                                                                                           In the Culinary Arts Program the students have been learning through the following list of topics, which we talk about every day

  •             Food Safety
  •             Nutrition
  •             Local foods

Our gardens and Green houses

  •             Allergies
  •             Estimation
  •             Science

In our conversations we decide each day what we should eat the next day. Naturally, we all have different tastes so it is always an interesting discussion. We have to take into account whether it is healthy or too similar to what we ate the day before. We talk about food allergies and how they are different than our preferences.                                                                                                                                                                                                              We just celebrated the 1st birthday of our sourdough bread starter. We have been making bread from that starter every week.

After we have finished our discussions we begin prepping for lunch the next day.  We start cutting and mixing and measuring, taking out the compost and typing the menu. In the morning we find out how many kids are absent so we know how many we are feeding and then proceed to make the lunch.     Some of the menu highlights.

Class Notes: Liz & Mbachi’s Class, January 22, 2016                                                                                                                                                       We are moving along with our research for our documentary film about Huntington Crossway – a street a Bridgehampton. Mbachi is working with a small team who are going to the Bridgehampton Historical Society and the local library in order to conduct research. The kids are already seeing many threads of a story that they are delving into in order to construct the narrative for the film. Our story for the radio play, podcast and noir film is in process, and we hope to have our first podcast on air in February. We are exploring non-fiction writing by way of a project based upon writing about a word. Some of the words the kids are writing about are: life, bad, friendship, food, bad, hiding, and adventure.We read excerpts of the book, Consolations - The Solace, Nourishment and Underlaying Meaning of Everyday Words by David Whyte as a touchstone text for this project. We discussed how our unique experiences shape the ways in which we think and write about words. While editing and revising our work for publishing, all of the kids will research an aspect of writing they want to know more about, develop a lesson plan, and teach what they learn to the class.                                                                                                                     Please click here or more information on the filmmaking program >
